Both Based on the Book "The Devil's Marriage"
                                                        By Gary Brumback

                                             Potentially Good for America

                                              Publicly                     Publicly
                                          Responsible            Responsible
                                         Corporations          Government

Corporations, government and individual citizens are not inherently corrupt. American government starts with a piece of paper, the U.S. Constitution. Corporations also start with a piece of paper, a corporate charter. Citizens start at birth being basically helpless and benign. Corruption is not inevitable and it need not be permanent. If America's corporations and America's government were publicly responsible and served the common good they could have an enormous potential for helping America become a more peaceful, egalitarian, and prosperous nation. What we have instead is:

                                 AMERICA’S RUINOUS CORPOCRACY

                                         THE DEVIL'S MARRIAGE
Corrupt Corporations + Corrupt Government = RuiNation

What leads to corrupt behavior over time in any given situation is the situation itself and the vulnerable characteristics of the people in that situation. The corpocracy is the situation. The people in it are the corruptible people.

The corpocracy is the Devil’s Marriage between powerful and corrupt corporations in the driver’s seat and corrupt government in the back seat. The marriage partners corrupt each other with their constant exchange of favors. The corpocracy, the Devil's Marriage gave birth to the Devil's Nation, figuratively speaking. Literally speaking, it has the worst socioeconomic conditions among advanced nations; it is the most warring nation on the globe for self-serving purposes; it is beginning to resemble a police state in response to the potential threat of counter terrorism; and it is gradually heading toward an end stage of RuiNation.

America today is absolutely not the kind of nation her founders designed after the bloody revolution against King George’s oppressive and ruthless chartered corporations. One primary purpose of the U.S. Constitution, its framers wrote in its preamble, is to "promote the general welfare." They would be revolted to know that in America it is the corpocracy's welfare that is being promoted instead.

                                     The Corpocracy’ s Opposition Today
                                                Divided and Conquered
E Pluribus Pluribus, Out of Many Many

The corpocracy is a united and powerful force. Its opposition today is a divided and weak counter force. The opposition is absolutely incapable of mounting a strategically guided and publicly backed campaign of government reform and/or corporate reform.

Current initiatives to end corporate personhood such as a Constitutional amendment, even if achieved (and that would be no small feat), are a single-dimension solution. The corporacy does not depend on corporate personhood alone and would in any case find alternatives for its absence. The entire corpocracy must be ended, either by reforming government and/or corporations.

The American people at large are fragmented and powerless. Grassroots movements such as the Occupy movement are as yet unconnected to the silent majority of Americans. Unions, a customary bulwark of democracy, have been deliberately decimated by the corpocracy.

There are over 100 NGOs independently challenging various elements of the corpocracy. If these NGOs could be caught in a moment of  unguarded candor they would admit that their impact on government/corporate reforms has been essentially negligible. Government and corporations are as corrupt as ever.

                             The Corpocracy’s Opposition Tomorrow
                                        Could be United and Strong
E Pluribus Unum, Out of Many One

One of the endorsers of "The Devil’s Marriage" has said this: “[It]---gives us a battle plan, and issues a challenge to join forces to reclaim our democracy. This is the pre-eminent American challenge for the 21st Century.”

Are we Americans up to that challenge? We definitely are if we collectively launch  “Two-fisted Democracy Power;” an altered version of it, “Corporate Reform Teams;” or some combination of the two.

                                    TWO-FISTED DEMOCRACY POWER

                                      1. The U.S. Chamber of Democracy
                                                                    and/or
                                            Local Chambers of Democracy
                                        (See the Illustrative Models page)

One fist would be the USCD, a super coalition of many NGOs pursuing together strategically guided reforms of all three branches of government and/or local chambers of democracy doing what they can to end the local versions of the corpocracy. Neither the USCD nor any local chambers exist yet. But they could some day. The choice is up to conscientious and beleagured Americans, the 99%  who know right from wrong and who "can't and/or don't want to take it any more."

                                         2. The Democracy Coalition
                                     See the Democracy Coalition Page

The Democracy Coalition does exist. It is small but growing slowly almost daily. The majority of Americans think corporations have too much power, government is too big, and that America's endless wars need to end. By uniting into a super coalition the many faces of the passive majority along with the many social activists and grass roots groups could provide the political pressure behind reform initiatives.

A Call to American NGOs to Charter a Real USCD

While the petition drive begun April 2011 continues with over 300 signatures collected so far, this is a call to all American NGOs opposed to the corpocracy to endorse the idea of and then unite to form a U.S. Chamber of Democracy. A series of e-mail messages have also been started to NGOs inviting them to become charter members.

A Call to All Occupy Groups to Create Local Chambers of Democracy

Occupy groups are being sent messages suggesting they start informal local chambers of democracy.

                                     CORPORATE REFORM TEAMS
An Alternative to or Part of Two-Fisted Democracy Power
                                   See the Illustrative Models page

The USCD would involve many NGOs collaborating together in trying to reform an entrenched and corrupted government. But the NGOs contacted so far seem to prefer continuing on their separate ways, perhaps reluctant to have their separate identities  and projects diluted. Therefore, in contacting more NGOs an alternative proposal will also be presented to them.

The alternative would be for NGOs to form smaller teams along with supporting movements. Each team with its own different NGOs and movements would try to reform corporations in a particular industry instead of trying to reform the entire government. This alternative by targeting corporations rather than government might be much easier and would also allow the individual NGOs to retain more of their independence while still contributing to corporate reform.

                                                 -----------------------------
Are the ideas on this page fanciful? Is a near miracle fanciful? You be the judge. But remember, there is nothing fanciful about the corpocracy. It is real and it is America’s own worse enemy. The cliche "things will get worse before they get better" is too risky in the nuclear age and too insensitive to the plight of millions today who need hope and help. Do nothing to oppose the corpocracy or too little to oppose it and we are allowing the continued slide of America toward becoming a RuiNation. Do nothing and our descendants, for however many generations are left, will know we did nothing. And until we are gone we will know we did nothing.
